The Center's Structure

The Center for Broadening Participation in Computing (CBPC) is a hub of innovation, opportunity, and empowerment. Rooted in academic excellence and committed to equity, CBPC exists to increase the representation of historically marginalized groups in the computing workforce—especially African American scholars. This mission is advanced through several initiatives, including the Software Engineering Degree Program and the Culturally Relevant Computing Lab.

CBPC is supported through strategic national partnerships and serves students across the Atlanta region and beyond. Offering include hands-on training, research preparation, and professional development opportunities that bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry and graduate school demands.

Our Mission

The Morehouse College Center for Broadening Participation in Computing aims to increase the participation of Blacks and other underrepresented and marginalized groups in the computing workforce, reduce the harm done by emerging technologies to members of society, and decrease disparities among disenfranchised groups through the tech ecosystem.

Degree Programs

DETAILS

Morehouse Software Engineering Degree Program: A rigorous and relevant undergraduate curriculum preparing students for software careers and graduate study.

CS to CMPE Program

DETAILS

CS to CMPE Program: A collaborative initiative with Georgia Tech that allows Morehouse Computer Science majors to pursue a second bachelor’s in Computer Engineering. Students benefit from course cross-enrollment, transportation, shared advising, and support aligned with national semiconductor workforce development goals.

Summer Bridge Experience (SBX)

DETAILS

The Summer Bridge Experience (SBX) is a six-week virtual pre-freshman program designed to prepare African American students for success in computing majors and beyond.

Duration: 6 weeks
Dates: June 23 – August 1, 2025
Location: 100% Virtual
Eligibility: African American incoming freshmen in Fall 2025
Credit: Optional 3 credit hours from Morehouse College
Stipend: $2,600 (issued upon program completion)
Application Deadline: April 30, 2025
Notification Date: Students will be notified of their acceptance by May 16, 2025
Acceptance Deadline: Accepted students must confirm participation by May 23, 2025, or their spot will be offered to another applicant.

SafeInsights Summer Training Program

DETAILS

The Morehouse Center for Broadening Participation in Computing, in partnership with SafeInsights, is offering a fully virtual summer program designed for undergraduate students and K-12 teachers interested in education research.

Dates: May 18, 2025 - August 8, 2025

Machine Learning Technician (MLT) Postbacc Program

DETAILS

The Machine Learning Technician (MLT) Postbacc is a 12-week, full-time immersive training program designed to provide you with the essential skills required to excel in machine learning roles.

Program Length:

12 weeks: June 9 - August 29, 2025

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Format: Live instruction (Hybrid: Virtual & Hands-On)

Location: Morehouse College

Eligibility:

Must have earned an undergraduate degree within the last 12 months (any major)
Must be a U.S. citizen
Must be available for full-time participation

What You’ll Learn:

Weeks 1–3: Python Training
Weeks 4–5: Python for ML, data processing
Weeks 6–7: Supervised & unsupervised learning
Weeks 8–9: Model evaluation & deep learning
Weeks 10–12: TACC supercomputing & capstone project

Benefits:

$1,200 stipend upon successful completion

Level Up Summer Enrichment Youth Program

LEVEL UP is more than a tech program—it’s a space where young men are encouraged to think critically, build confidence, and explore how technology shapes the world around them.

Empowering Boys of Color in Grades 6–12 to Explore Computing, Robotics, and AI

Program Dates: Saturdays only, June 7 – August 2, 2025

Time: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Lunch Provided)

Location: Morehouse College, John H. Hopps Jr. Technology Tower (Building 5B on the campus map.

Audience: Boys of color in grades 6–12 from the Atlanta area

Cost: $200

Black Issues in Computing Education (BICE) Symposium

The Black Issues in Computing Education (BICE) Symposium is the premier venue for research on innovation, challenges, and best practices related to Blacks in postsecondary computing education. The symposium will be held on October 8-10, 2025, in Miami, Florida. The theme of this year's symposium will be “Computing Education in the Age of AI.” The in-person conference will offer opportunities for attendees and presenters to participate in sessions, networking, and collaborative discussions.

Integrating Supercomputing-Powered Instruction, Research, and Entrepreneurship (InSPIRE)

This workshop is designed for computational-focused STEM faculty at both undergraduate and graduate levels. InSPIRE will be held on October 8-10, 2025, in Miami, Florida. Participants will learn how to access and apply supercomputing systems to enhance research and instruction, examine real-world uses of high-performance computing in undergraduate education, and integrate supercomputing into curricula through structured modules and assignments. The session will also guide on securing NSF funding for advanced computing infrastructure and introduce tools to support students' onboarding and project-based learning in supercomputing environments.

Executive Technology Lecture Series (ETLS)

This industry engagement series provides companies with the opportunity to connect directly with top computing students at Morehouse through lectures, panels, and recruiting events.

National Impact & Strategic Partnerships

CBPC is proud to collaborate with institutions like Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Tech, and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, as well as organizations such as TACC (Texas Advanced Computing Center), Coursera and Karat’s Brilliant Black Minds initiative.
